9:10am – Panel: Finding Balance for Today's Working Caregiver

  • More than 44 million Americans today have a second unpaid job as a caregiver for a family member. What economic and emotional tolls does the working caregiver face? What is the "Sandwich generation"? How does South Florida's system of support compare nationally? Answering these and other questions will be leaders from South Florida's caregiving community and health and human services agencies including:
    • Chris MacLellan - Whole Care Network, Moderator
    • Stacy Balkanski - Gilda's Club of South Florida
    • Donna Linette - Broward Health
    • Billie Morgan - 211 Broward
    • Julie Price - Arc Broward

9:50am – Panel: The Business Case: Retention, Productivity & Profit

  • Businesses like Deloitte, Qualcomm, and Facebook all have recognized that an employee's responsibility to care for a disabled child, a terminally ill spouse, or an aging parent should not prevent that employee's success at work. What are the creative HR solutions employers should consider in supporting these employees? Do the benefits outweigh the costs? Will they lead to stronger recruitment and retention? Answering these and other questions will be leaders from small to large businesses in South Florida.
    • Debra Tornaben, South Florida PBS, Moderator
    • Kara Nickel, Stearns Weaver
    • Ali Lemaster, JM Family Enterprises
    • Eric Chisem, Broward County Public Schools

10:30am – Panel: The Public Policy Outlook

  • From local government expanding leave policies to national and state caregiving coalitions advocating for supportive legislation, there is a real movement to address the important needs of caregivers. Which public policies should be prioritized? Who are the stakeholders driving change? What advocacy efforts work? Answering these and other questions will be leaders from local, state and federal government, advocacy organizations, and caregiver coalitions
    • Diane Lade, Sun Sentinel, Moderator
    • Mayor Barbara Sharief, Broward County
    • Heather Davidson, United Way of Broward County
    • Jennifer Braisted, Alzheimer's Association
